From Hopper to Rothko. America's Road to Modern Art
This exhibition catalogue is dedicated to American art from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism, showcasing rarely-seen works from the Phillips Collection, Washington DC. In the Gilded Age, landscape painting was a development that led to abstraction in the interplay with European influences. The book presents Duncan Phillips as a collector and promoter of this young art. It contains essays by American and European authors, who put the representative selection of 68 paintings by 50 artists in the context of US social development. The collected works tell the parallel and diverse art stories of a young nation.
With Essays by Susan Behrends Frank, Alexia Pooth, Susanne Scharf, Corinna Thierolf, Ortrud Westheider und Sylvia Yount.
