Camille Pissarro and the fans. It was the Impressionist artist Edgar Degas who encouraged Pissarro to create fan-shaped paintings. Fans experienced a boom in the salons, not least due to the Japanese enthusiasm of the late 19th century. A welcome sideline and, at the same time, an artistic experiment with a mobile canvas that was visible even outside of enclosed spaces, in everyday life.
