The publication From Hopper to Rothko. America's Path to Modernism is dedicated to American art from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism with rarely shown works from the Phillips Collection, Washington DC. In the Gilded Age, a development began with landscape painting, which, in interplay with European influences, led to abstraction. The book introduces Duncan Phillips as a collector and promoter of this young art. It contains essays by American and European authors who place the representative selection of 68 paintings by 50 artists in the context of social development in the USA. The works gathered here tell the parallel and diverse art stories of a young nation. With contributions by Susan Behrends Frank, Alexia Pooth, Susanne Scharf, Corinna Thierolf, Ortrud Westheider and Sylvia Yount. (Text: Prestel)
